Minimal groups paradigm (tajfel 1970): even arbitrary and virtually meaningless distractions between groups can trigger a tendency to favor one"s own group at the expense of others. Schutz (1958)- relationship between psychological needs and group formation. Inclusion- desire to be part of and accepted by a group. Control- need to guide the group by organizing and maintaining group processes. Affection- need to maintain open, positive, relations with others. Social roles: shared expectations in a group about how particular people are. Needs affect group behaviors in 2 ways: How we want others to treat us supposed to behave. Psychology healthy men to be prisoner/guard- random assignment. Guard see prisoner but prisoner could not see prisoner eye. Put string on reel- presence of other people perform better.
