Age of viability age at which a fetus can survive if born early (22 weeks!) Teratogen any agent or condition that can impair prenatal development & result in birth defects or death (diseases, medications, drug use) Critical period is the time of greatest vulnerability (for each body structure) 20 - 30% of babies born to hiv positive mothers contract the disease! Less than 5% of babies contract hiv /aids if pre- & postnatal care includes: Fas caused by heavy drinking (5+ per day) Fas causes severe cognitive, physical, and behavioral deficits. Fas is the leading behavioral cause of mental retardation. Fetal alcohol effects (fae) is a milder form of fas. Three stages of labor: dilation & effacement of cervix, delivery of baby, delivery of placenta.
