PSYCH 225 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Female Ejaculation, Sylvester Graham, Sexual Arousal
Sexual arousal and communication techniques
• Orgasm as a verb- phrase “achieve an orgasm” if u don’t have an orgasm then do you fail?
o The pressure of feeling the need to achieve can get in the way of actually having an orgasm
• Orgasm continued
o Orgasm (verb) makes the receiver’s part of the experience more proactive
o Orgasming is something that a person does, not just something that happens
• Orgasm is something that you do to yourself, you can’t give it to yourself or your partner can’t give it to you
• If you want to orgasm
o Think of orgasming as a learned skill
o You need to practice on your own
o Fantasize often helps someone get to the orgasm
o Use a vibrator if that helps
o Be aware of what your body is telling you, women should be aware of fluttering sensations or
contractions
• The elusive vaginal (or hands free) orgasm
o Recent research confirms that there are different types of orgasms for women, but BOTH are the
result of clitoral stimulation
o Most research does not consider whether the woman's clitoris is being stimulated during vaginal
intercourse
o Only 6-10% of women have orgasms during intercourse with no additional vaginal stimulation
o Strongly associated with how close clitoris is to vagina (anatomical difference--not a skill)
• Foreplay
o Foreplay- orgasm-centric focused. Typically men’s orgasm is the signal to end the sexual
interaction
o This is not the model of female-female sexual encounters and also does not appear to be the
model in other parts of the world
o Masters and johnson 4-phase model- foreplay as the “first course”
o Foreplay is not the same for all around the world, sexual scripts change throughout the world
• The G-spot and female ejaculation
o G-spot- grafenberg spot, controversial, to find, fingers 2-3 inches inside and you do the come hither
motion and you will find the spot that is more sensitive (g-spot), g-spot stimulation is not always
arousing for all women or arousing all the time
▪ The g-spot (short for grafenberg spot) is a very controversial structure thought to be
located in the tummy side of the vagina, about 2-3 inches inside the vagina
▪ When it is stimulated it swells up
▪ The g-spot is where the clitorus is hanging down to, bladder is also in the spot
▪ Don’t know what's being stimulated but know it feels good
▪ G-spot became popular bc of the same, makes it seem mysterious
o Female Ejaculation-
▪ Female ejaculation can sometimes be associated with stimulation of g-spot
▪ What we refer to as female ejaculation is the expulsion of fluid through the woman's
urethra
• We don’t know what this liquid is
▪ When females ejaculate and there is urine in there bladder, once they ejaculate there is
no more urine in the bladder, so is female ejaculation pee?
▪ Female ejaculation is not heavily studied
▪ Expulsion of urine confirmed!
▪ Textbook: female ejaculate has similar properties to male ejaculate
• Masturbation questions?
o Is masturbation healthy?
▪ Sylvester graham created the idea that you shouldn’t masturbate
▪ John kelly Kellogg- thought that a brand of cereal would help spread the awareness that
people shouldn't masturbate
▪ No association between masturbation and poor health exists
▪ More masturnation and better partnered sex
▪ Women who masturbate are more likely to orgasm with a partner
▪ Among college students, 60% of women and 88% of men report masturbating
o Can too much masturbation hurt hour selx life
▪ Masturbation rate is stable no matter if you are in a relationship or not
▪ Masturbation is a stable individual difference
