PSYCH 112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Circadian Rhythm, Synaptic Pruning, Sleep Debt
Document Summary
We spend approximately 1/3 of our lives asleep: memory storage, immune system functioning, insight and problem solving, neural development, neural pruning. Circadian rhythm: changes that occur on a 24-hour basis. Adults need about 7-9 hours of sleep: sleep debt accumulates over time and must be paid back hour-for-hour. Stages of sleep: stage 1, theta waves (small amplitude waves) Sudden body jerks (myotonic jerks) occur here: stage 2, sleep spindles and k-complexes (lower frequency, stages 3 and 4, delta waves (very big amplitude and low frequency, rem (rapid eye movement) (waves look very much like wakefulness) Becomes longer as the night goes on.
