Document Summary
Mental disorder: any behavior or emotional state that causes distress or suffering, is maladaptive and disturbs relationships and the greater community. Legal standards: whether or not a person is in control of behavior and aware of the consequences of his/her actions. Dsm-iv tr: standard reference book for all disorders most recently replaced by the dsm 5. Descriptive and provides a set criteria for diagnosis. Many of the symptoms are based on subjective (not objective) measures. Some categories have political / social / cultural implications. Diagnostic categories take a developmental/lifespan approach beginning with disorders that appear in infancy/childhood through those most likely to occur in adulthood. Autism spectrum disorder replaced different categories, including pervasive. Bipolar disorder considered its own category instead of in the mood disorders. Ocd (including hoarding) and ptsd are no longer considered anxiety disorders although anxiety is part of the symptom picture. Bereavement can be included as a stressor for major depressive disorder.
