Helps restore bodily functions: sleep deprivation: 2: rem sleep active brainwaves, increased hr/blood pressure, limp muscle state, 80% rem is dream sleep, alternates on 90 min cycles, 20% of sleep is rem. Developmental issues with sleep: newborns/infants 50% of sleep rem, by age 3-5, 20% overall sleep (similar to adult level) Infants hardwired for more rem sleep: adolescents have shift in sleep patterns/needs, delayed phase preference changing biological clock leading to adolescents staying up late/sleep later, teens sleep less but need more sleep, leads to decreased productivity levels. 30 min: symptoms between puberty and 25, cataplexy/sudden loss of muscle control characteristic, may experience sleep paralysis, may be accompanied by vivid dream like images. Insomnia difficulty falling asleep/staying asleep: up to half american"s report at some time in lives. Secondary insomnia related to other challenges (depression, anxiety)
