The self: predictive predict how other people are going to respond to you. The self enables us to see ourselves the way others see us. Parts that are approved/disapproved by our parents that we admit: motivational to ourselves. Objective self-awareness theory our being in a state or environment where we are likely to think about ourselves. We don"t like to think or be aware of ourselves. More likely to live up to our ideals when in a state of self- Trust vs. mistrust awareness: infant needs to be carried and not just fed, styles of attachment. May cry as mom leaves; greets mom when she returns. Becomes upset when she leaves; avoids mother upon return. Becomes upset when she leaves; continues to fuss. Seems confused when she leaves and returns. Autonomy vs. shame/doubt : autonomy ability to control oneself: children learn a lot of autonomy, but are limited with some shame/doubt, ex.
