PSYCH 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Cognitive Restructuring, Identified Patient, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Document Summary
Psychotropic medication : alter the biochemistry of the brain. Ritalin: very quickly in and out of the system. Beneficial for people with tics because stimulants may exacerbate tics. Lithium for bipolar disorder; newer class of mood stabilizers (valproate) Deep brain stimulation as a surgical treatment for depression and ocd. Thin electrode surgically implanted so electrical currents can be delivered. Never a first line treatment, but for individuals who are not responding to to the brain other treatments. Practically like a pacemaker for the brain. Psychosurgery : lesion/destroy problematic areas of the brain to eliminate disruptive behaviors (lobotomy; ocd surgery) wasn"t as successful as deep brain stimulation. Electroconvulsive therapy (ect) : shock therapy; beneficial to those with severe depressions which are not responsive to medication/therapy. Under muscle relaxants, shocks are administered to trigger seizures. Transcranial magnetic stimulation : using a powerful pulsing magnet alters neuronal activity in the brain; less invasive than ect.
