PSYCH 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Subjective Constancy, Depth Perception, Tabula Rasa
Document Summary
How do we come to know the world. The nativist-much of our knowledge comes based on innate structures and perception. The empiricists position-we were born as blank slate. Transduction-process by which we take a physical stimulus energy into electrical charges in nerve receptor cells; its no use if you can"t transduce. Sensory adaptation-fatigue of a sense due to constant exposure to a particular stimuli. Vision- cones-allow us to see bright light, spatial detail, different colors. Rods-dim lights, peripheral vision, color-blind(lot more rods than cones) Some aspects of color are cannot be explained by trichromatic theory(vision is based on 3 wavelengths of cones) such as after-images. We have 3 kinds of cones, but they aren"t just responsible for one color, they show two colors depending on whether they are excited or not. Energy bounces of tree and reaches eye(light which is proximal stimulus)
