Document Summary

Memory : the capacity to retain and retrieve information. Recall : ability to retrieve information which has been learned earlier. Recognition : ability to identify previously encountered information. Relearning : effort is saved in having learned something before. It"s easier to relearn something than it is to learn something completely new. Ex: list the names of the 8 reindeer that were rudolph"s friends. When presented a list of names, you will have an easier time recognizing them than to recall. Mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune, pluto. Information processing model : memory and mind are like a computer. Encoding : how to put information in, retain, store, and retrieve. Involves maintaining encoded information in memory over time. Calling up file and displaying data on monitor. Levels of processing : different levels of processing impact encoding. Examples of questions used to elicit appropriate encoding. Phonemic encoding: emphasizes what a word sounds like.
