NURS 245 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Germline Mutation, Adult Stem Cell, Genomic Imprinting
Document Summary
Mutations - out of the million codons, we accumulate about 100 mutations; most mutations are not beneficial or harmful, however, a single mutation at a key spot can be fatal to an individual. Accumulation of mutations in germline cells over 3. 5 billion years has given rise to evolution of species. There are genetic diseases associated with every chromosome. Mutations are caused by a change in genome changes the base creates a different amino acid which changes the protein therefore changes the function of the protein. Genetic mutations do not always result in disease. * - mutations are inherited when the mutated dna is located in the ovum and or sperm; however, you can acquire mutations in the somatic cell like in the liver (ex. cancer) This is only if an inherited genetic disorder is expressed only as an abnormality in the liver. It may still be transmitted to the next generation.
