Document Summary

Overview of organic metabolism-how you change organic molecules. Measurement of energy: calories-4 calories/gram proteins and carbs; 9 calories/gram fats. Control of organic metabolism-control of organic metabolism in absorptive and post-absorptive states, control of rate of metabolism, control of temperature, and control of metabolism in stress. Aims-supply all cells with energy source; supply neurological cells with glucose; build and repair tissue. Post-absorptive state-begins about 4 hours after a good meal. Could last up to a week-mobilizes stored energy. 2-3 hr after eating-mainly carbs (fats take longer to digest) between meals-about 4 hours after meal. Insulin-permits facilitated diffusion of glucose into cells epinephrine, gh and cortisol block glucose uptake (by most cells)-can reserve the glucose you do have for neuro cells. Neuro-must always have glucose and rbc: glucose insulin independent-don"t need insulin to allow glucose to enter insulin independent. Amino acid formation and protein synthesis-make your own protein. Gluconeogenesis from amino acids and glycerol-breaking down proteins to form new glucose insulin.
