Only 25% of jews remain (600,000 killed, most exiled ethnic cleansing ) Possibly triggered by hadrian"s plan to build temple dedicated to jupiter to replace 2nd temple. Occurs during reign of hadrian = golden age of roman empire: period of centralization: local leaders replaced w/ those sent from roman epicenter. Crisis of the 3rd century ( 230-284 ce): problems in roman empire . Foreign invasions : rise of sasanians in east, barbarians in west.
