Document Summary

16th and 17th century period of important scientific events. 18th century science came to resemble science that we know today. Some of the vocabulary wasn"t familiar but basic divisions of science and the things you take for granted had come into being. The science is a domain and separate from religion and drawing on ancient knowledge. Not just in latin, people study in school. Reaching down into people with much more modest means. Sense of excitement about the fundamental notion that the natural world could be an object of study and human knowledge. Some of the metaphors used at the time are violent: putting nature on the rack(torture device) and forcing her to reveal her secrets. Not pursuit of cold knowledge, seen as 18th century culture instead of off to the side. William paley: ordained priest of the church of england, passionately interested in science, close study of the natural world, a way to see the mind of god.
