ENVIRON 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Chignecto Bay, Tidal Bore, Qiantang River
Document Summary
The largest tidal ranges in the world ocean - up to 17 m - occur in coastal areas. Extremely strong tidal currents - up to 25 miles per hour - occur in some constricted areas near coastlines. Highest spring tidal range (17m or 56ft) is in bay of fundy, canada. Natural period of oscillation for bay of fundy is about 12 hours. Tidal currents are strongest at ebb and flood, and zero at high and low tides. They can reach speeds up to 25 mph. The maelstrom is found between two islands off of norway. At times the flow there is so strong it creates a whirlpool. Another example of a whirlpool is in strait of messina between italy and sicily. Wall of water that moves up certain low-lying rivers. Exist only in rivers where spring tidal range is large.
