Average age of first marriage in u. s. today is 27 for women and 29 for men (compared to 20 and 22 back in 1960: cohabitation. One of the most striking trends affecting the institution of marriage: cohabitation (unmarried people in a romantic relationship living together). The majority of all marriages today begin as cohabiting relationships. People of all races and ethnicities cohabit at similar rates. People of lower socio-economic status cohabit more than those of higher socio-economic status. It used to be that you could be fired for letting people who were not married or blood related share a hotel room.
