● Media bombards viewers w/ info via TV, newspaper, internet, etc.
● Agenda setting→ Media defines important issues through its choice of
what to present

Framing Theory
● Psychological roots→ Micro level studies of individuals
○ Frames of reference-- A person’s pereptions o the orld
○ Prospect theory-- Depends on point of ref of info given
● Sociological roots→ Macro level studies of society
○ Attribution theory-- People simplify their perceptions of social reality by making
judgments about what causes others to act
○ Frame analysis-- Rely on soially shared meanins to ateorize ino into shemas or
primary frameworks
Effects of Framing
● Frames invite people to think about things in a certain way (Tewksbury and Scheufele 2009)
● Both accessibility and applicability are important processes in framing
● Framing studies focus on origin or evolution of news frames
● Framing researchers study audience interpretations of news, whereas persuasion researchers
study changes in audience attitudes

● Journalists may be influenced by:
