How do we know things: knowledge is any belief that we can reasonably presume to be true, claims are things that we hear from others (it takes 7 years to digest a piece of gum) Weak form of evidence, depend on trusting another person. Strength of inference depends on the evidence we are using to make it: experiences are things we experienced or watched happen (jon ate lunch at noon) Strong evidence, but it is often hard to discern how or why something happened. We also don"t know how often something is true: science consists of things we can manipulate (does alcohol impair driving?) Take away #1: knowledge claims stem from evidence-based conclusions. Scienti c method: theory, make a prediction, form a hypothesis, propose a test, collect data, compare test to prediction, analyze data, interpret results, make a conclusion, modify the theory: example. Theory: television shapes our perceptions of what the world is like.
