Document Summary

Cogsci 200 - bayesian babies & suspicious coincidences. Reverse optics - probability of a certain scene given the pattern of life. Forward options - probability of a certain pattern of light being that scence. Sensory input color, shading, texture, contours shapes from background 3d representation. Bayesian inference takes us from step to step. Note: probabilities must take on values between 0 & 1. Data doesn"t necessarily have to -- d is an event, not a number. Function - problem the capacity is supposed to solve. Algorithmic - procdeures that enable the problem to be solved. Physical - the neural/chemical substrates in which the procedures are implemented. Helps us find the most likely real-life scene given information. Apart from optical illusions & set of tricks theory. Visual system is well-adapted to constraints on perceptual input and the stastical structure of our environment. We prefer simpler explanations to these suspicious coincidences.
