BIOLOGY 230 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Marchantia, Gametophyte, Antheridium
Document Summary
Marchantia: the male gametophytes produce stalked archegoniophores. They bear antheridia on the upper surface of their tips: female gametophytes produce stalked umbrella shaped archegoniophores which have archegonia spores are not the same as stomata. Pores make air chambers for photosynthetic cells that do gas exchange: the rhizoids are on the lower surface of the liverworth. Each cup contains many gemmae: once the cup is lled with water, the cells oat away, mature gammae inside the cup then detach, germinate new plants. They develop from the outre spiral layer of the spore: they are tubular cells with spiral thickenings. Spores usually appear as rounder darker and the spore capsule is usually at and often a brown-speckled sheet. Marchantia: the height of the archegoniophore might be adaptive to the sporophyte of marchantia as the two would grow to similar highers so that the sporophyte could fertilize it.
