Document Summary

Plant anatomy and secondary growth: meristematic regions within the plant. Tissues that retain ability to divide (mitosis) throughout ontogeny. Totipotent (can develop into any cell during the plants life cycle) Primary growth (a) apical meristems - apex of organ. Primary growth: growth that occurs relatively close to the tips of roots and stems. It is initiated by the apical meristems and is primarily involved with extension of the plant body often the vertical growth of a plant. The tissues arising during primary growth are known as primary tissues, and the part of the plant body composed of these tissues is called the primary plant body. Ancient vascular plants, and many contemporary ones as well, consist entirely of primary tissues. In addition to primary growth, many plants undergo additional growth that thickens the stem and root; such growth is termed secondary growth. Active cell division occurs in the meristem tissues.
