BIOLOGY 207 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Telomerase, Chromosome, Dnab Helicase
Document Summary
Microbial dna needs to r eplicate accurately & quickly so as to grow & compete with other. Bacterial replication involves an amazing number of proteins and genes coming together in a species. complex machine. Operation of the replication complex is all the more remarkable. Some bacteria, such as thermophilic bacillus , can double their population in < 10 minutes! Replication of cellular dna in most cases is semiconservative and bidirectional . Semiconservative : each daughter cell receives one parental. Picture on side: at the replication forks, there is advancing dna (shown in gray) and one newly synthesized strand (shown in purple). synthesis with the machines separating the parental strands, while extending the new growing strands in purple. The bacterial chromosome replicates by direction because it begins at a fixed location called the origin , and it progresses in opposite directions , with two replisomes going down the left and right arm of the bacterial chromosome.
