ARCH 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: New Urbanism, Transit-Oriented Development, Transect
Document Summary
Nyc has very low per-capita energy use-- less than half of all people own cars, public transit in nyc accounts for half of that in us. Dense cities are scalable, sprawling suburbs are not. Leads to broad spectrum of ideas that can be attributed to new urbanism"s success. Traditional grid-like design w/most solid space, and a key delineation between public & private spaces. Birth of new urbanism rejects sprawl- creates a finite city that prevents endless sprawl. Mixed-use- good mix of public, private, commercial land in one area. Built individually-- one building at a time, like cities used to be-- creating a sense of individuality. Whole community built at same time ages together. Individual owners will hesitate to make upgrades in a neighborhood that is in uniform decline. Allowing things to be built individually allows small-scale testing-- if successful can continue w/idea (whereas if idea tested all at once entire town can fail)
