Patterned ways in which legitimate power and authority are used to regulate behavior. Bands: foragers, least complex form of sociopolitical organization; small; nuclear families; No formal leadership: more focused on personal skills/talents that can benefit group. Usually egalitarian-- everybody is equal, no one tribe is more powerful than other. Being related to a leader doesn"t guarantee any power. Big man: wealthy, position depends on personal attributes and achievements. Kapauku tonowi: wealth must be distributed; severe consequences if not; selfish greedy individuals fail to comply to kapauku generosity rule may be put to death. Must reply on personal charm; verbal gift. Uses different tactics to persuade people to do something mad dance (pull hair, yell, breakdown crying); eloquent speech. Segmentary lineage organization: (nuer) alliances that can be activated during conflict. Leopard-skin chief: house provides neutral ground; negotiates compensation debts paids through his mediation; crucial to maintain social order. Internalized controls: deeply ingrained shared beliefs and values that guide behavior.
