Economic, military, political domination that is achieved without significant permanent settlement . Forms of imperialism: nation building, control of natural resources, and domination of peoples. According to said, imperialism is supported/motivated by impressive ideological formations, seen as inferior. Discourse: accumulation of images, texts, ideas, and other representations about a subject. Ex: justice can have multiple meanings/images associated with it. Hegemony: the domination of certain cultural forms over others through common sense/consent. Ex: police officer discourse- we think of police brutality right now but dominant discourse is police seen as a hero. Each person has a different way of viewing things. As knowledge: a system of meanings in which european culture was able to manage and produce the orient. Academic and scholarly work in 1970s us. Who is recorded in history, who is left out. Europe loses or gives up colonies in the middle east/africa. Hegemonic: extensive influence of a particular idea.
