The higher the prestige ranking of an occupation, the fewer the women in it, and the lower the percentage of women of color. Occupational sex typing (def): when women or men are concentrated in a given occupation, or in particular jobs within an occupation or work organization. Males: leadership $ ex) bosses, presidents, doctors. Females: nurturing $ ex) nurses, teachers, secretaries. Women are denied access to power, influence, achievement, and independence in the public world. Men are denied access to nurturing, emotional, and other-oriented worlds that women traditionally inhabit.
