Between world war 1 and the 1970s, there were massive waves of african american migration to northern cities, both for work opportunities and to escape discrimination and violence in the south. There was a concurrent movement of appalachians. But this doesn"t get discussed as much for a few reasons. In a lot of the places, the appalachians moved back home. American migrants, appalachians had the relative fortune of being able to maintain roots in their home region. Because many appalachian migrants were white, the impact that they had on cities- albeit often significant-was often socially less visible.
