Idea and practices that postulate reality beyond that which is immediately available to the senses. Some argued that religion differs from other kinds of worldview: existence of a supernatural domain, anthropologists define it broadly in order to encompass everyone, beliefs in spirit, gods, cosmic power, rituals, practices. Ideas: prayer, physiological exercise, exhortation, mana, taboo, feast. Sacrifice: how do people communicate in religion, poem, songs, trance, and other forms, how are religion and social organization related, religion is institutionalized. Evans-pritchard: witchcraft, oracles, and magic among the azande (1937) Invisible forces to which people address questions and whose responses they believe to be truthful: chandi temple in cuttack city, orissa, india, mother worship, mother goddess worship, puja, the sacred rites of hindu worship, mandala. It is also a place where everyday social reality can be temporarily transcended by the devotee: shakti, arati.
