Like facebook, youtube wants to show you a customized mix of interesting content. But until youtube knows you viewing habits, they can"t do much about that. Each time you view a video, youtube tracks that action and adds it to your history. Together, they form a composite user profile. Applying this continuously updated profile to your video options is a type of learning. The basic idea with learning systems is: Over time, sufficient information is gathered to form a good solution to a knowledge problem. The set of locally popular videos is the baseline. Successive user actions (e. g. , which videos are watched and for how long) give information. Each return visit, you get youtube"s best guess about what you"d like to see.
