This scale of operation naturally generates a corresponding level of network traffic. Amazon, by itself, must process hundreds of transactions per second. On top of that, every transaction is preceded by related browsing activities. But amazon"s cloud network can actually handle upwards of a million transactions per second. Consumer view: transactions are exchanges involving a payment. May involve reciprocal release of goods (retailing) May simply clear an existing obligation (paying credit card bill) Computer science view: transactions are any communication involving mutual recognition of information reads or writes, such as: Querying a database and receiving the response. The actual transaction (items, credit card #, etc. ) Browsing around purchase (most viewed items not purchased) To be competitive, large retailers must deploy or rent reliable, high-capacity cloud services. Internet existed primarily as a specialized tool for government, military, research, & education. Amazon started in 1994 as an online bookseller to circumvent inventory challenges of physical stores.
