Facebook"s size gives it tremendous inertia as the social media app of choice. Slowing internet adoption makes it harder for any new competitor to thrive. 2. 3 billion users, 1. 6 billion daily users. Activities that are simple on a small scale require specialized systems for facebook. Putting a photo on facebook is a complex multi-step process. The ability to execute these steps quickly is key to facebook"s competitive advantage. Facebook has to match supply and demand for the aggregate users actions. Throttling or other equivalent limitations leave a vulnerability to competitions. System capacity depends on hardware a& process design. Over time, processing capacity had to meet the photo upload rate. Big for, say uic is trivial for facebook. Big for 1999 is trivial for 2019. Working definition: data quantities requiring special tools for system to manage. Requires an initial "seek" delay to find the staring point. Cheap but slow: used for storage, not computations.
