Investigate differences that exist between or among existing groups when there is no intervention or treatment present. So the difference here is that there is not randomization of participants into groups and no intervention or treatment has been assigned. They are looking at groups that already exist. Sample grouping is based on naturally occurring groups (e. g. female/male; ethnicity; school/classroom; region of the us). Categorical: attribute that cannot be measured or quantified. For example: a researcher is interested if there are gender differences for how a group experienced childhood trauma. The type of dv (categorical or continuous) has important implications on the data analysis and data collection. After administering the data collection measure (survey, test, questionnaire etc. ), the researcher sorts data into the identified groups based on their research question. It could be from some demographic factor or it could be based on level of responding (high scorers, medium scorers, low achievers) Then the researcher picks their statistical analysis test.
