Interpretation is critical and a defining feature of qualitative designs. However, the five designs adapt ethnographic practices and their lenses for purposes other than describing and interpreting culture. Definition: research in which detailed consideration is given to the development of a particular person, group, or situation over a period of time but within a bounded context . Data collection methods: use observation, interviews, and document analyses (similar to ethnographies) Data analysis and interpretation: can use any type of analytic and interpretive procedure as described in chapters 3 and 4. Example: following 5 girls in the same school, through high school, to look at how they form their identity of stem achievement. Quantitative data may often be used to provide background or demographic information. Note: much of the research in human development and education that might be called ethnography could actually be an ethnographic case study. Bounded-specific people in an instance of that culture.
