Document Summary

Term of hierarchical distinction, a status of dignitaries. A virtue, a learned habit or disposition that realized human excellence, according to aristotle. But that virtue, had to be realized: an acquired social and political status, the result of personal achievements in the public sphere, dignitas: a virtue of a few great people. No mention on ha"adam kavod in the bible. The genesis placed humans below god, and above the rest of his creations, granting them a certain dignity. But, not as a result of an inherent worth, but rather of the love of god. Tomas aquinas: summa theologiae: value, proper to its place in the great chain of being, foundation of human dignity: notion that human beings are created in the image of god. Idea of the two cities: the city of god, governed by heavenly, eternal and spiritual love, the city of man, governed by earthly, temporal and physical love. Both are present in every person and human group.
