SHS 170 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Soft Palate, Fundamental Frequency, Vocal Folds
Document Summary
Articulation: refers to the production of speech sounds. Articulators: are structures involved in the production of speech sounds: system extends from the opening of the mouth and nose to the vocal folds. Includes three cavities: oral cavity (in mouth) Extends from lips to back of the throat: nasal cavity (under nose) Extends from the nares to the velopharynx: pharyngeal cavity (behind throat) Vocal tract refers to all three cavities together. The shape of the vocal tract is modi ed by the articulators. Teeth ( held within alveolar processes of upper and lower jaw respectively) Moveable articulators (lips tongue, soft palate, pharynx) Speech production: air from the lungs serve as energy/ power source, vibration ( closing and opening) of the vocal folds initiates phonation, air in the vocal tract is set into vibration, resulting sound is complex. Whole number multiples of fundamental frequency (harmonics: shape and length of the vocal tract modi ed by the articulators to produce vowels and consonants.
