(cid:863: plastic can take hundreds of years to decompose and releases toxins into the soil and water in the process. Environmental solutions are not always the most cost-effective: we have to fight the status-quo, often the people most highly affected are poor or disadvantaged and they have little voice in policy. Some issues require multi-national efforts: unfortunately: policy is highly influenced by corporations as they are the stakeholders with the most power. Sustainable solutions have to be: socially desirable, economically feasible, ecologically viable. Grand challenge 1: maintain or restore natural ecosystem function while providing essential human services. Grand challenge 2: sustainably raise the quality of life for the world"s poor to acceptable levels. If the concerns of sociologists, economists, and ecologists can be brought into intersection, sustainable solutions in a society are much more achievable. International cooperation is necessary to tackle some environmental problems.
