Surface low pressure near indonesia (clouds/rain): high pressure near south america. As easterly winds push water from east to west. Higher sea level deeper layer of warm water to west. Warm, most air rises over western south pacific ocean. Air sinks near west coast of south america. Driest place on earth : atacama desert , chile portions average 1mm of rain a year. Pressure gradient in atmosphere weakens across equatorial pacific. Walker circulaion reverses: clouds/rains in east; dry in west.
