ANTH 180 Lecture 13: Lecture 13- Human Sacrifice
Document Summary
Produced some of the greatest pottery in the ancient andes. Bodies being pecked at by bird of prey-also found during excavations. Discovery of bones on the mountain-showed same scene that can be found on the pottery. Written testimonies that the incas said to the spanish suggesting child sacrifice. Drawing of sacrifice of child on top of a mountain-called capac hucha. Documents with families telling the spanish about their child being honored to be chosen as a capac hucha-children that were unblemished and chosen by the priests and walked to their final destination, child is regarded as semi-divine. Top of mountains were seen as the location closest to the gods-that is the location of child sacrifice. Children were given coca leaf and alcohol to be numbed before being killed-evidence of vomit/lung infection most likely due to physically draining journey up the mountain.
