Document Summary
Deep south- dened by the fact that a signicant amount (>20%) of their population is african american. Five deep south states: louisiana, alabama, sc, mississippi, georgia. Peripheral south- southern states that do not have a signicantly large black population. In general, the 11 ex-confederacy states are considered southern. There were the 7 who left the union before the war began in 1861 (texas was. 7th to go, leaving in february of 1861) and 4 who left after the war had already began in april and may. Other than these 11, kentucky, oklahoma and maryland are sometimes considered southern. Usually considered to be shared values and beliefs, or the opinion of what role the government should play in our lives. It can also be considered common evaluations of current o=ces and institutions. The south has generally believed in limited government power, especially the control of governors.
