Lecture notes, the function and evolution of orchestra 3/24/15. Music for orchestra functioned for dancing and marching, symphonic poem, and obviously symphony. Growing size of orchestra and increasing number of civic orchestras. Started to make hybrids of symphonies and other genres ex. La mer (debussy)- three symphonic sketches, debussy was not interested with symphony as a form. Closing lyrical theme in brahms 1 is similar to that in beethoven 9. Brahms felt considerable pressure to live up to beethoven"s legacy, which is why it took him so long to write his first symphony (20 years!) Like beethoven he has no common formula for his symphonies. 4 finale has 30-8 measure variations based on the ostinato of bach"s cantata 150. Brahms (1833-1897) was good friends with schumann, declared he was the messiah of music at age 20. 9 was meant to teach americans to use songs of native americans and african americans (ex. pentatonic) woodwinds linked to shepherd"s reed pipe.
