Advantages over cigarettes: unlikely to cause lung cancer, more socially acceptable in most circumstances. Increased risk of cancer of the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus: risk of leukoplakia, nicotine dependence, caused by potent carcinogens such as nitrosamines.
