Ways in which children experience the end of their parents" union: death of the father or mother, divorce of married parents, witnessing the breakup of unmarried cohabiting parents" union. Legal ending of a marital union or the informal ending of a cohabiting union. Union repartnering: formation of new unions either by remarriage or a new cohabiting union. Broad cultural and economic changes have influenced levels of union dissolution: cultural change, cohabitation, men"s employment, women"s employment, age at entry into union, race and ethnicity. Cultural change: commitment versus personal well-being or fulfillment, shift toward concerns of the private family versus concerns of the public family. Largely unregulated by law: when it starts and when it ends are solely up to the partners, either of the partners can end the relationship at any time without taking any legal action. Commitment to each other is understood to be limited. Cohabitation has become the main driver of rising union dissolution among young adults.
