Foucault maintains that there has been a historical shift in the administration of power. From the body of flesh to the mindful body: the prisoner timetable, prisoners get up at the same time, hours for hygiene, labor hours; strict timed schedule. Docile bodies the shift in modernity"s from punishment to discipline results in the creation of docile bodies: discipline produces subjected and practiced bodies, docile" bodies , compliance with hegemonic norms and structures. Foucault, femininity and the modernization of patriarchal power (bartky 1988) She acknowledges that power operates through the mind, through self-surveillance, and the stimulation of desires. But she says that foucault ignores gender. She is critical of foucault and says he"s blind to hose disciplines that produce a modality of embodiment that is peculiarly feminine (yes this discipline creates docile bodies, but it looks different for women"s" bodies) She argues that women"s bodies are an ongoing performance of gender that involves discipline.
