11/12/15 lect: patient experience 1- gender, medicalization, & patient. Ii: todays topics, david rothman"s argument about the causes and symptoms of medicalization, 3 examples of alleged medicalization; childbirth, breast cancer treatment. Iii: structural causes for medicalization, decline of house calls-you don"t want surgeries done in a house, less than 1% made house calls. Dr"s no longer have access to their homes which they once could see how they lived and maybe cause of sickness. It was inefficient for dr"s to do house calls because they lose time from travel and he could be with 3 other patients compared to just one. Also office visits were the cost of house calls. The amount of paperwork that dr"s have to keep/process was a large amount and it would have not me efficient. Dr"s office was located in the actual dr"s house but shifted to one central office. Portability issues with bringing equipment to the patient"s house: growth of specialization-gyno, ent, pediatrician etc.
