The catholic church rules the western hemisphere during the 15th and 16th century yet the church is under attack from protestants because they believe the church is corrupt- paying off sins with indulgences -1517. 1580s- calmed down by queen elizabeth because she introduced religious toleration. 1585- english first colonized part of virginia (now north carolina) roanoke- first colony settled by english. English"s reasons for colonizing america: money, god-religion, to save the indigenous people and slaves- they would be considered as heroes/liberators- black legend . Black legend- many atrocities committed by spanish to indigenous people and slaves. Magna carta (1215)- took away a little of the kings" power- started a part in english history that led to the english bill of rights, constitution. John smith & jamestown (1607)- english comes back; elizabeth has died so her brother.
