BIOL 3324 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Basilar Membrane, Sound, Membranous Labyrinth
Document Summary
Light= electromagnetic waves made of photons: has both electric and magnetic component, visible light is a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Structures of the eye: eye is a sphere enclosed by three layers. Cornea is transparent front part of eye. Ciliary body= muscles that allow lens to contract or relax and thus control accommodation. Iris= colored muscle that controls amount of light that enters eye. Inner nervous tissue layer: aqueous humor= between cornea and lens. Made by ciliary body: vitreous humor= between lens and retina. Light must be focused on retina to be transduced: retina is the site of transduction, it contains photoreceptors, light must be refracted by cornea (mainly, lens= a transparent structure that also focuses light on the retina. Its shape determines how much refractin occurs controlled by suspensory ligaments and ciliary muscles. Ciliary muscles relaxed= distant object viewed, lens flat. Ciliary muscles contracted= near object viewed, lens rounded.
