Receptor= transduce sensory signal electric signal for the cns: range in complexity, stimuli= a change in sensory information that is detected by our receptors, sensation= to be aware of sensory information. If the sensory input reaches cerebral cortex: results in receptor potential graded potentials. Need to initiate action potential transmit signal. Can lead to ap in sensory neuron or release nt: establish and maintain membrane potential, have gated channels in plasma membranes, specific to certain stimuli. Chemical (chemo), light (photo), heat (thermo), pressure/ vibration (mechano), solute concentration (osmo), pain (noci) Ex: wetness= touch + pressure + thermal receptors. Have taste pores where taste producing chemicals contact gustatory cells. Microvilli= dendritic ending, where the tastants contact the gustatory cell. Type 1= responds to na+, salty: direct entry of sodium ions thru enac, channel. Type 2= uses gpcr to detect sweet, umami, bitter: sweet triggered by fructose specific configuration of glucose, umami triggered by amino acids, esp glutamate, bitter triggered by alkaloids.
