Charles the great, named after the empire, called carolingian empire. It signifies that he"s a very catholic, wants to bring and spread his belief. He want to be assured that he is a ally politically. The model was from marcus aurelius, but he thinks it"s from constantine. Because constantine was the first to legalize christianity, charles want to spread that he adores the art with the twist that he"s a holy emperor. Looks to be in bad shape because of its overuse from the people. Used model to look at the body, position, fore shorting, and relief. He want christian art to be used in some roman technique. Decorative: appealing to the eyes, close to the roman art as possible. Two carolingian st. matthews in one charlemagne"s idea. Done in a style with a different emperor. The chapel has few differences with the justinian"s. The arches are more bolder, and the tiers are thicker.
