Technofunctional types: form indicates technofucntion, a bowl shape is a bowl, shape and size indicate use. If it is painted, not put over fire. A circle shape is a griddle/comal = tortillas. A weird pot shape thing is a crater = stewpot. Rough bottom retains heat; weird heart looking shape is an amphora = storage: residues help identify use/technofunction, weird little pot shape is hatched inside, spice grinder. Sociotechnic types: decoration can distinguish different social groups, ex teotihuan = closer compound was to city center, more crater sherds, clothing is used to differentiate groups. Ideofunctional: figurines = household rituals or deities, consumable perform ritual then destroy it, miniature vessel = found in burials . much smaller than is possible to use.
