SOCI 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Organ Donation
Document Summary
We are all sociologists study social living from the outside. We observe social life = amateur sociologists. Use the sociological eye to recognize patterns and trends. Way of looking at the world where you don"t take things for granted. Stands back and makes the world observationally strange . Good sociologists make the familiar feel strange/foreign. E. g. instead of simply participating in a group conversation, note patterns: Who talks the most or the least. Whose conversation is built up and whose is dead end. It observes patterns of status, power, and alliances (siding with who) The sociological eye allows us to step outside and look at patterns of belief. Women are more religious on average vs. men (leaders of faith) Older people are more religious vs. young. Gives a new way to look at religion. Instead of looking as a fan, it sees sports as a type of social glue that helps keep international groups together.
